Great Cars and a Good Crowd
enjoy the 27th Sockeye Run
The 27th annual Sockeye Run Car Show was another big success, hosted by The Richmond Lions Club in Steveston Park in Richmond. 272 special interest cars were on hand for the huge crowd to enjoy.
"Best In Show" was a fresh 1932 Ford Roadster, painted black. It is owned by Gord Gray and built by B & N Hot Rods.
"Farthest Distance" went to Harry Robertson of Vernon, Harry was a longtime Richmond resident and former Lions member, who was recently featured in Richmond News on Friday June 9th.
"Electric Avenue" was the name bestowed on the second annual Electric Vehicle Showcase. Nine car dealers were on hand to answer questions and promote this latest technology. There were also solar powered toy cars for children to play with and B.C.'s first electric Hot Rod built by Chris Carlson of Slocan Valley, B.C. Volunteer John Rolson worked hard to put this display together.
A major attraction at the show was two racing vehicles restored by Mo Davidson of Surrey B.C. The "Miss British Columbia" drag boat and the former "Pete Kaiser top fuel, front engine dragster. The boat had at one time held the national record for speed at 192 mph, while the dragster has recorded 243 mph in 6.22 seconds. Mo fired up the dragster to the delight of the crowd.
Two hundred and fifty children raced cars on the exclusive Hot Wheels race track and received new Hot Wheels Cars and Pirate Pack coupons courtesy of White Spot. Twenty other children attended a model building work shop where they were taught the hobby of building models by volunteers, Rick McEwan, Steve Holloway and Rob Danzel.
The Richmond Lions Club would like to thank all the volunteers, car owners and sponsors. White Spot, Save-On-Foods Group and River Rock Casino went out of their way to assist in the car show presentation.

B.C.’s FIRST ELECTRIC HOT ROD
The Richmond Lions Club was delighted to hear that Chris Carlson is bringing his electric hot rod to the Sockeye Run Car Show. The 1937 Chev Coupe is powered by recycled lap top batteries. The car has six regular automotive batteries and they provide the electrical power for the lights, radio, etc. It is the lap top batteries that power the car and they are in the frame. Its range is about 160 km, which is similar to a Tesla, or other electric cars. This is the first hot rod with an electric motor that is known in B.C.
